Zero to Hero or somewhere in between – How far do you want to go?

Do you remember your first dive? Or maybe you haven’t made it yet. Either way it is one of the most exciting things that you’ve probably ever done or can hope to do!

Credited as being the Father of scuba diving, Jacques Yves Cousteau was the pioneer who opened up the opportunity that we have to dive today. For him, diving was about conquering the unknown and releasing yourself into it.

“From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.”

Jacques Yves Cousteau

For many people their first dive is a special moment as they experience something entirely new and usually discover straight away if it is for them or not. After classroom preparation, theory and skills the moment you finally get to jump into the water is an exciting one. This is where you put your newly acquired knowledge into practice .

Many people describe this experience as:‘when everything just clicked into place’ or ‘suddenly I was just doing it’.For people who have never dived before the first questions that usually come to their mind are -‘what will I have to do?’ , ‘Will I be able to do it?’, ‘Is it dangerous?’. As soon as they’re underwater and actually diving many of their fears and worries are ‘washed away’ and their confidence grows throughout the dive.Once out of the water many first-time divers believe they will dive for the rest of their lives. Of course, the holiday ends or the water gets colder and time, money and life get in the way and people don’t dive as often as they want to.

At Haad Yao Divers we specialise in dive education – for beginners and experienced divers. The great thing about diving is that there is always something new to learn – whether it’s developing a skill or learning a completely new one. Then you can progress all the way from fun diving to professional diving and learning how to become a Divemaster or Instructor. The Padi structure enables you to take the learning at your own pace and develop within at your own pace for your comfort and convenience .

Haad Yao Divers has been teaching people how to dive and develop their diving skills on Koh Phangan since 1997. We only work with small groups, and offer high standards of teaching in a relaxed friendly atmosphere with personal tuition. Courses can be taught in English, Deutsch, Dutch, Spanish and Français with teaching materials available in many other languages.

The first step in learning how to dive is the Open Water Course.  At  Haad Yao Divers you can do this course in 3-4 days either on the beach or on our boat. We have flexible solutions for people who are on holidays or traveling – need to do it in shorter time? Then you can start from home and do your theory online through the PADI e-learning course. If you need to take more time with it we can accommodate your schedule – you’re on holiday we want to help you relax! When you complete your PADI Open Water Course  you will be licensed to dive anywhere in the world up to 18m. It is your passport to underwater discovery and adventure. If you’d like to sample the under water delights before you commit to the PADI Open Water Course you could also explore the Discover Scuba Diving day long course.

Digital Underwater Photographer

From the Open Water you can go a long way. Once you have the basics you can really start to develop your personal interests – what kind of sites do you like to dive in? What kind of fish do you like best – macro or the big stuff? Are you a photographer or just interested in identifying marine life. One of the best ways that people approach this is to do the Advanced Open Water Course where you select 5 courses of which two are navigation and deep dive Of course, if you’re on your holidays you may not be able to commit to 3 days for the course so you have the option to break it up and only pick what you want. As the PADI system is modular all of your credits count and you can do 3 courses (usually possible in one day) on one holiday and 2 courses on another holiday to complete your Advanced certification.

Take a look and see what you might like to discover next. Don’t take our word for it – see what our past students have to say. Watch out for the follow up blogs where we look at the speciality dives in more detail and help you to decide what skill you might like to learn on your next holiday.

Need a life break  or want to dive for a few weeks or more? Then you might like to ‘go-pro’ with us. As Koh Phangan’s first 5 star Padi IDC Dive Resort we have helped hundreds of divers make the transition from Divemaster to Instructor.

You don’t have to become Jacques Yves Cousteau but I’m sure most divers would agree with him in saying:

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

Jacques Yves Cousteau

Are you one of these? Have you been cast under the spell like us? Why not like our Facebook page and stay connected with us to keep sharing the experience?
